Ammaroo

Ammaroo

Phosphate Project, NT

Project Overview

The Ammaroo Phosphate Project is a globally significant resource being the largest JORC compliant resource in Australia and one of the largest undeveloped phosphate rock resources in the world. Phosphate is one of the three essential nutrients for plant growth and is a key input into the global fertiliser value chain that is critical in ensuring global food security.

    Project Overview

The Ammaroo Project contains a >1 Billion tonne resource of Phosphate (P2O5) ore, the largest JORC compliant phosphate resource in Australia and one of the largest undeveloped phosphate resources in the world.

Verdant announced discovery of the Barrow Creek 1 phosphate resource in late 2010. In 2013 Verdant acquired Central Australian Phosphate and aggregated the adjacent and contiguous resources to form the Ammaroo resource.

The independent JORC resource including Measured, Indicated and Inferred is 1.141 billion tonnes P2O5 at an average grade of 14%, and cut-off of 10%.

Verdant has undertaken 147,028 m of exploration and resource drilling and has undertaken the required geological and chemical analysis to establish the mineral resource.

The Ammaroo resource lies on pastoral lease land under Native Title. The Native Title holding parties impacted by the project are the Kaytetye Alyawarr Awenyerraperte Ingkerr-wenh Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC,  Eynewantheyne Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC and the Kaytetye Tywerate Arenge Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC. Verdant is working with all native title holders and the Central Land Council to protect cultural heritage and provide compensation, commercial, training and employment opportunities for local people as part of the project.

Verdant successfully completed a feasibility study on the export of phosphate concentrate from Ammaroo in late 2018, which confirmed the technical and economic potential of the resource.

In 2019, Verdant was de-listed from the ASX under 34.4% ownership of Washington H Soul Pattinson (ASX: SOL) and new majority owner CD Capital Natural Resource Fund III (CD Capital) with 66.6%.

Verdant is now evaluating processing the Ammaroo resource into phosphate concentrate with further value adding steps to produce phosphoric acid and ammonia in order to manufacture ammonium phosphate fertilisers in an integrated operation on the Ammaroo leases.

The Ammaroo Ammonium Phosphate Fertiliser project would produce in the order of 2 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of phosphate concentrate, with further downstream processing resulting in 500 kilo tonnes per annum (ktpa) of merchant grade phosphoric acid (100% P2O5) and production of 200 ktpa of ammonia, for conversion to approximately 1 million tonnes per annum of ammonium phosphate fertilisers, such as Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and Mono-Ammonium Phosphate (MAP).

DAP and MAP are the single most consumed end-use fertilisers in the world. There are significant regional markets in Asia as well as a significant domestic market in Australia, that is currently largely serviced by imports from China, Northern Africa and the Middle East.

Ammaroo is well located to participate in the fertiliser supply chain, accessed via rail to the Port of Darwin to the north with proximity to export markets in India, South East and North East Asia and Adelaide to the south to service southern Australian agricultural markets.

The Ammaroo Ammonium Phosphate Fertiliser project represents a valuable economic opportunity for Northern Australia and importantly, to locally manufacture fertiliser products for Australian farmers, underpinning agricultural supply chain resilience and self-reliance.

270 kilometres (km) northeast of Alice Springs, 220km southeast of Tennant Creek, 95km from the Adelaide to Darwin Railway.

      What is Phosphate?

Rock phosphate is a rock form of naturally occurring phosphate which is created from sea floor sediments of ancient and current day oceans.

Rock Phosphate is the most common source of Phosphorous in plant fertilisers, and is essential in plant photosynthesis. Phosphorous is one of three critical macronutrients required by plants to grow, the other being Potassium and Nitrogen.

Phosphorous is crucial for the health and vitality of all plants. It provides the ‘backbone’ structure of the DNA and RNA molecules in all living things. Phosphorous is a key component of ATP, the energy molecule in plants used to capture and store the sun’s energy which is converted into carbohydrates.

Rock phosphate, such as that at Ammaroo can be processed to produce merchant phosphoric acid, (~54% P2O5), an intermediate fertiliser product that is used in the production of end-use fertilsers such as Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and Mono-Ammonium Phosphate (MAP).

Fertilisers ensure food growth is high yielding which in turn supports global food security and the efficient utilisation of scarce resources in global food production.
